Description

Samuel Adams Stony Brook Red

This unique brew, Samuel Adams Stony Brook Red,  builds from the inspiration of Flemish reds. It begins with an earthy sourness and hints of dark fruit but the tartness gives way to a rich maltiness and touch of toasted oak. These flavors are rounded and deepened by the barrel aging for a layered & alluring brew.

THE TOOLS
This unique brew defies traditional beer style definition. Its combination of flavors are created by melding a rich maltiness with notes of tart fruit from the yeast and a toasty oak character from the barrel aging. The signature, almost wine-like character comes from its high proportion (over 50%) of Kosmic MotherÒ Funk®(KMF). This distinctive brew is its own Belgian ale we’ve aged in large oak tuns for over a year.

THE TRADE
Blending with Kosmic Mother Funk gives this beer its distinctive and complex layers of flavor. KMF is our Belgian ale that’s been aged for over a year in large oak tuns where it undergoes a secondary fermentation with brettanomyces and lactobacillus yeasts. The KMF as well as bottle conditioning gives this unique brew a a tart, earthy, fruity and estery character.

THE LEGACY
Inspired by Belgian Reds and Flemish Oud Bruins. We wanted to create a unique brew that featured the contribution of the aged Kosmic Mother Funk with its distinct flavors of fruit and sour tartness. Belgian Reds and Oud Bruins showcase the flavors from using special yeast strains and aging the beer for long periods in oak barrels. The beer is also the result of blending old and young brews. Flemish Oud Bruins, like Red ales, are tart and sour, with an added sweetness and smoothness and a roasted malt character.

Samuel Adams Home For Research And Development

The Boston Brewery is where all of our beers get their start, with the exception of Boston Lager, which was born in our founder Jim Koch’s kitchen. It is the smallest of our three breweries (the others are in Cincinnati, OH and Lehigh Valley, PA – Please note these two breweries are not open for public tours/tastings.) but it is the most important. The Boston Brewery is akin to a test kitchen – it’s where we try out new ingredients, and brew specialty beers that are available only in the Boston area or in our Brewery tasting rooms. When you visit us for a tour, you may have the opportunity to try a beer that you’ll never get to try again or maybe one that you’ll be able to pick up in a six-pack a year down the road. We’re constantly innovating and pushing the boundaries of brewing to make sure that from the ingredients to the glass, every pint of Samuel Adams beer is as good (if not better) than the last.
